Subscribe? Good to know!
- For minors starting in September, after the registration period in March, a draw takes place in April if there are at that time more subscribers than available places.

The ‘central dogma’ introduced by Francis Crick in the 1950s states that the information necessary to produce proteins is contained in the DNA. This is made possible through the DNA first being transcribed to mRNA and subsequently translated into polymers of amino acids.

The relationship between changes in the genetic code – the DNA – through mutations and the consequences for the polypeptide/protein will be studied in this course. We will also study DNA more closely and discover what else it consists of, in addition to the genes that code for a protein.

In the first part of the course, the central theme is working with DNA and genetic analysis. The second part of the course will focus on protein, protein expression, purification and characterization of proteins. All this will be covered during lectures, working lectures and tutor meetings. In addition to this, the whole process from amplifying genes, then expressing proteins to the analysis of proteins is covered during practical classes in the laboratory. You will apply many different techniques, such as PCR, cloning with the help of vectors, growing bacteria cells, protein purification, enzyme kinetics and protein determination.
